AB Budget 2013-2014

Student leaders at Lethbridge College are concerned with the newly released Letters of Expectation sent from the Minister of Advanced Education to post-secondary institutions. These Letters are unprecedented and are mandates sent by the government to Alberta’s 26 Universities, Colleges and Technical Institutes outlining their individual roles. Through this Letter of Expectation the government appears to place funding for post-secondary institutions as contingent upon agreement to an agenda towards post-secondary centralization. We consider this a form of coercion by the Government of Alberta to achieve their agenda. We are concerned this newly created Campus Alberta will become more than a brand post-secondary institutions are forced to carry on their letterheads. We see it as a move towards a centralized system dictating what will—and what will not—be taught in Alberta’s classrooms.
